Shillong, Jan 4: Samples have been sent for testing to find out the reason behind people falling ill after consuming food during a community feast during the New Year’s celebration in East Jaintia Hills.
Social welfare minister Kyrmen Shylla, who is also the local MLA, told reporters on Tuesday that it is suspected to be a food poisoning case.
Thirty people from lapmala village in East Jaintia Hills district were taken to Khliehriat community health centre (CHC) due to food poisoning after attending a community feast.
As many as 160 people from the village came for treatment to the CHC out of which 30 were admitted since the condition was serious.
Shylla said more than 500 people were affected by the incident and most of them are children, women and elderly people.
He said the condition of the people is stable.
“Fortunately, due to the timely action taken by all concerned, not a single life was lost in the incident,” he added.
