Govt to set up consultative panel for cenotaph renovation

Shillong, March 21: The government will form a consultative committee under the chairmanship of West Garo Hills Deputy Commissioner Jagdish Chelani regarding the renovation Garo Labour Corps cenotaph.
The committee will ensure representation from key community stakeholders which will include the CEO of Tura Municipal Board, a representative from the Garo Hills Autonomous District Council (GHADC),
one representative from the families of the fallen heroes and the representatives from the
Mothers’ Union and senior citizens Association (nominated by their respective associations).
In a statement issued on Thursday, the deputy commissioner said the committee will review concerns, gather community inputs, and ensure that the final
design reflects the true spirit of the cenotaph. The outcome of the committee’s discussions
will be presented to the Urban Affairs Department and the CM for further action.
“Given the public interest in this project, it is crucial that discussions remain fact-based and constructive to ensure the cenotaph’s dignity is upheld, he said .
The deputy commissioner reminded that the necessity of renovation arose after news reports had mentioned neglect of the area which had prompted Chief Minister to initiate a project for upgradation.
