HYC asks govt to repeal gaming act, denotify commission

Shillong, May 9: The Hynniewtrep Youth Council (HYC) has asked the government to repeal the Meghalaya Regulation of Gaming Act, 2021 and its Rules and wanted the government to nullify the appointment of  retired Judge of Allahabad High Court, Justice Naveen Srivastava as the chairman of the Meghalaya Gaming Commission.

The HYC met deputy chief minister Prestone Tynsong and submitted a memorandum in this regard.

The HYC general secretary, Roykupar Synrem ( in picture) told reporters that the decision to appoint the gaming commision was illegal.

The NGO also extended support to the church leaders who are opposing gambling.

Synrem pointed out that the taxation department had failed to follow what has been written in the Act. There was supposed to be a search committee and accordingly the names shortlisted for appointment of the chairman should be placed before the cabinet for its approval.

He also pointed out the contradiction in the statement of the Chief Minister that gaming act is yet to be implemented whereas the taxation department has already appointed a gaming commission.

The HYC general secretary said if the intention of the government is to generate revenue, the government should first avoid spending on festivals which does not benefit the state besides spending on chairmen and co-chairmen of various boards.
