
Shillong, Nov 2: Police official GK Iangrai, who is facing probe for alleged diversion of funds in the construction of National Emergency Response System (NERS) building at Sadar police station, has been arrested.
A police source confirmed the arrest on Wednesday after a raid.
The arrest comes at a time when the High Court of Meghalaya is set to take up a pending PIL on the matter, on Wednesday.
The court was annoyed over the inaction of the police on the matter during the past hearings.
Earlier on October 28, the CID had registered a case against Iangrai under the Prevention of Corruption Act.
This followed the constitution of a Special Investigating Team (SIT) headed by DIG (Eastern Range) Davis Marak.
According to the FIR, the construction cost of the NERS building was Rs 95,78000 but Iangrai misappropriated Rs 35 lakh.
In the past, a probe team headed by Inspector General (Law and Order) Mukesh Kumar Singh had found Iangrai’s alleged involvement in procurement of 29 vehicles when he was holding the post of Assistant Inspector-General of Police (Administration).
Later, he was posted as Commandant SF-10.
The arrest is based on the inquiry report related to the construction of the National Emergency Response System building at Sadar police station.
The report had named Iangrai for alleged misuse of funds.
A statement issued by the CID said that simultaneous raids were conducted at the residential premises of Iangrai at Lum Shyiap, Chanmari, Upper Golf Links, official quarter at Golf Links and farm house at Rtiang, Umsning, Ri Bhoi based on the warrant issued by the court of special judge ( Prevention of Corruption Act) .
Iangrai is still in police custody and after medical examination, he will be produced before the court on Thursday.
