Illegal coal seized in East Jaintia Hills

Shillong, May 10: Authorities seized coal dumped illegally in East Jaintia Hills.

In compliance with the directions from the High Court of Meghalaya and the Directorate of Mineral Resources (DMR), a joint team comprising an Executive Magistrate, East Jaintia Hills District, Police and DMR officials conducted a raid in the district and it was found that coal was dumped outside the officially inventoried coordinates.

The coal was seized on the spot by the team and following the seizure, the coal was transported to a Coal India-authorised depot for safe custody.

As per the assessment report on May 9 received from the Divisional Mining Officer, the total quantity of around 6000 MT of coal has been seized. FIR has been registered under provisions of the Mines and Minerals (Development and Regulation) Act (MMDR) and further investigation is underway.

This was informed by the Deputy Commissioner, East Jaintia Hills District.
