Indian women beat SA to lift the ICC World Cup trophy

Mumbai, Nov 3 (Agencies): The Indian women’s team beat South Africa by 52 runs to win their first ICC World Cup on Sunday.

This was the third time that India reached the final after 2005 and 2007. The ICC website said captain Harmanpreet Kaur has waited a long time for the ultimate success, and that’s why lifting the ICC Women’s Cricket World Cup trophy was extra special for the inspirational Indian captain.

“Harmanpreet was one of five players at the tournament to be appearing at their fifth World Cup, with the India skipper having made her international debut at the 2009 edition of the event in Australia in a 10-wicket victory over Pakistan,” the website said.

“I’m just trying to express what I’m feeling. I’m numb, I’m not able to understand,” Harmanpreet said.

“It’s just that there were ups and downs, but the team had self-belief. I’ve been saying this since day one. We weren’t looking to the left or right. We were only looking at our main end goal.”

But Kaur was not the only one savouring the victory. Legends Jhulan Goswami, Mithali Raj and Anjum Chopra were in the stadium watching the Indian women crush the gallant South Africa. The trio was Kaur’s teammates during her international debut in Australia back in 2009.

“I’ve seen this dream for over two decades, to watch the Indian women lift that World Cup trophy. Tonight, that dream finally came true. From the heartbreak of 2005 to the fight of 2017, every tear, every sacrifice, every young girl who picked up a bat believing we belong here, it all led to this moment,” Raj wrote on X.
