Shillong, July 6: Upper Lumparing Tibetan Monastery on Sunday hosted the 90th birthday celebration of spiritual leader Dalai Lama.
Prayers, cutting of cakes, butter lamp ceremony, cultural dances, and giving away certificates to senior citizens and students marked the occasion in the presence of Tibetan community of Shillong.
The celebration of 90th birthday of Dalai Lama assumes significance amid aging Lama’s successor debate and China’s continued opposition to free-Tibet movement.
According to Tsering Dolma, Member of Parliament, Tibetan government in exile, the occasion is also a reminder of the spirit of Tibetans all over the globe to ensure freedom.
She said the spiritual leader Dalai Lama wishes to live longer to carry on the legacy of the Tibetans to achieve what they dream.
The Tibetan Settlement Officer in Shillong, Tenzin Samten said the celebration reflects the longing of the Tibetan people under the guidance of Dalai Lama, who is an inspiration.
