MeECL issues notice to mobile companies for power dues

Shillong, June 13: The CMD of MeECL, Sanjay Goyal said the corporation recently issued letters to various mobile companies for failing to clear power dues.

Speaking to reporters on Tuesday, Goyal said, “The mobile companies have not paid their dues for their mobile towers. The same company is running towers in different parts of the state but not paying in certain places. So we have written to them that we will disconnect all if they don’t make the payments for all of them”.

The MeECL will also resort to mass disconnection drive against defaulting consumers after their outstanding dues have crossed over Rs 300 crore.

He said the payment default happened over a period of time.

“We are now working on as to how much of it is recoverable and how much of it we need to take legal course and legal action against them,” Goyal said.

Tariff review

The MeECL has filed a review petition before the regulatory commission seeking a revision in the power tariff.

Goyal said it is a fact that there are certain issues about the determination of the tariff for certain categories of consumers.

“According to the Corporation, we are not convinced about that level of tariff, which has been fixed. So there are certain procedures which need to be followed. Therefore, we are filing the review petition before the regulatory commission…I am sure we will get some relief from the commission,” he said.

More rain to reduce power cuts

He said power cuts  will be reduced if the rain situation improves in the days to come.

“If the rain situation improves in the days to come and we are comfortable with water level, definitely we will try to reduce the hours of load shedding, especially the times which are more desirable for having the power,” Goyal said.

Goyal said, “We are buying extensively from the open market to maintain the present level of loadshedding.”

He said in the last 3-4 days, the corporation has not gone ahead with the load shedding during the day as power was available in the run-off of the river projects like Leshka in view of the good rain.
