Miscreants damage idols at crematorium in city, Central Puja Committee meets DC
Two FIRs lodged with police for action
Shillong,Jan 3: Miscreants damaged two idols at Marwari Samshan Bhoomi area (crematorium), Mawbah, on Sunday night.
The crime scene unit of Meghalaya policeĀ visited the site and took evidence on Monday.
The Central Puja Committee met East Khasi Hills Deputy Commissioner and sought her intervention to take action against the culprits.
The chief priest of the cremation ground, Atmaram Giri, said he noticed broken pieces of idols Bhairava and Bhairavi (Kali) on Monday morning.
“I came around 5.30 am today and the main gate was already opened by someone. Later I found the damaged idols.It must have happened on Sunday night. There was an attempt to damage the idols on Saturday too as head portion of one of the idols was broken”, he said.
MP Singhania, the secretary of Marwari Samshan Bhoomi, has lodged a complaint with the police.
He said the incident happened around 11 pm on Sunday.
Another FIR was lodged by Vishva Hindu Parshad stating that the vandalism of idols has hurt the sentiments of devotees.
State BJP president Ernest Mawrie,who visited the area, condemned the incident and said the matter would be taken up with Chief Minister Conrad Sangma to provide security.
