Shillong, March 28:Sutnga-Saipung constituency MLA Santa Mary Shylla is unhappy over slow progress of work beyond Sonapur in NH-6.
Sonapur connects Meghalaya with Assam, Tripura and Mizoram.
A joint inspection of repair works of NH-6 was conducted on March 27 by the MLA along with Deputy Commissioner, East Jaintia Hills District, Shivansh Awasthi, Superintendent of Police Giri Prasad, Project Director NHAI, contractors and other officials.
“I have inspected the whole stretch of NH6 from Khliehriat till Malidor today along with NHAI and district officials and I am concerned seeing the slow pace of work. I feel the plight of local residents, commuters who have to bear with dust, traffic disruptions and bad road conditions. I will take up the matter with higher authorities and we have directed NHAI to ensure the completion of repair work before the start of the rain”, Shylla said in a statement on Friday.
Prior to the inspection, in the review meeting held at the office of the deputy commissioner attended by the MLA, the NHAI officials informed that the progress of the work is around 65% with the remaining work expected to be completed within 2 months.
The deputy commissioner informed during the inspection that the administration is in touch with NHAI with respect to the ongoing work and no-entry of heavy vehicles from 9 am to 5 pm has been imposed on request of NHAI so that the work can be expedited. However, the progress of work beyond Sonapur at Kuliang, Umkiang and Ratacherra is still very slow. NHAI has been directed to take adequate steps including deployment of additional manpower and machines to expedite the work.
The SP highlighted the critical locations where breakdown of vehicles leads to traffic snarl and asked the NHAl to take up the locations on priority and finish the work in next 2 weeks.
Among others present during the inspection were headmen of Umkiang and local residents who have requested the NHAI to expedite the work and urged the district administration to ensure continuous monitoring.
