Shillong, Feb 21: Trinamool Congress leader Mukul Sangma on Tuesday unveiled a land scam in Mawpdang village in East Khasi Hills under New Shillong Township where the government allegedly bought land a from middlemen at a price much higher than what the land owner received.
Speaking to mediapersons in the city, the Trinamool candidate from Songsak and Tikrikilla constituencies said the land owner sold the plot at Rs 45 per square feet and the government bought it for Rs 85/sqft, leading to a difference of Rs 140.7 crore.
When pointed out that there is no fixed rate of private land, he said that the state could have bought the land directly from the landowner and that it needs to be investigated who the middlemen were.
Sangma also urged the Union Home Ministry to run an investigation.
