Health minister reviews situation

Shillong, Dec 21: Health Minister Ampareen Mazel Lyngdoh reviewed the status of Covid in the state on Thursday in view of the recent increase in Covid cases in some parts of the country. The meeting was attended by the officials of health department. The new variant has been declared as variant of interest by the World Health Organisation. The variant, although identified earlier this year does not pose any new risk or new symptoms. There is no need for any alarm, she said.

“The surveillance activities have been done continuously by the Integrated Disease Surveillance Program of Health Department. There is no COVID cases in the state as of now. There has been no unusual increase seen in respiratory illness either”, the minister said.

However, the health officials have advised, in view of the festivities, precaution such as wearing masks in closed indoor spaces, maintaining hand hygiene and avoiding large gathering. Those with comorbidities such as hypertension, diabetes, kidney diseases and others should take additional precautions if they have fever or severe flu like symptoms, the advisory said.
