Over 400 Chakmas yet to get compensation for land acquired by MHA
Shillong, Mar 12: More than 400 Chakma landowners in Mizoram are yet to receive compensation for their land that was acquired by the Centre to set up 14 BSF outposts.
In a statement to the media, the Chakma Autonomous District Council (CADC) expressed concern over the delay.
The Ministry of Home Affairs constructed the outposts and the contract was given to NPCC Ltd. Land was acquired in the Sixth Schedule ADC area from 456 Chakma landowners, who mainly depend on Jhum cultivation, the statement mentioned.
“MHA did not pay compensation to the rightful landowners whose lands were acquired for the BSF border outpost development. The CADC government submitted a draft bill to the MHA border management officials concerned through NPCC Ltd and BSF in 2020. The CADC government does not have enough funds to deliver justice to the Chakma (Schedule tribe) landowners affected by the land acquisition,” the statement added.
The letter pointed out that CADC is dependent on state funding and that the Chakma tribals is being deprived of the constitutional right enshrined in Article 300A (right to property) by the MHA.
