Shillong, Jan 5: Meghalaya Pradesh Congress Committee( MPCC) president Vincent Pala wanted the state government to refrain from favouring one religion.
His response is after Education Minister Rakkam Sangma wanted a consecration ceremony for the inauguration of the first state university named after Capt. Williamson Sangma.
In a statement issued on Saturday, Pala said as president of Meghalaya Pradesh Congress Committee, he reaffirms unwavering commitment to the principles of secularism and inclusivity enshrined in the Constitution. “Secularism is the cornerstone of our democracy, ensuring equality, freedom, and respect for all religions in India. This fundamental value allows the rich tapestry of religions-be it Christianity, Hinduism, Islam, Sikhism, Jainism, Buddhism, indigenous faiths like Niamtre and Niam Khasi, and others-to flourish in harmony”, Pala said.
According to Pala, recent statements and actions that appear to favour one religion over others not only undermine the constitutional guarantee of religious freedom but also pose the risk of dividing our pluralistic society. “As a party that has always championed the ideals of Sarva Dharma Samabhava (equal respect for all religions), we urge all leaders, regardless of political affiliation, to act with sensitivity and responsibility in their words and actions”, he said.
He said the strength of Meghalaya lies in its diversity, and all communities-irrespective of their faith-deserve equal respect and opportunity.
The party also called upon the government to foster an environment of unity and mutual respect. Actions or statements that may polarize our people for short-term political gains must be avoided at all costs, he said.
“As we continue to uphold these principles, we appeal to all citizens of Meghalaya to stand united, respecting each other’s beliefs and contributing to the progress of our state and nation”, he added.
