PDF shelves James’ removal demand till MeECL probe

Shillong, July 15: The People’s Democratic Party (PDF) will wait till the inquiry into the scams in MeECL is over before moving ahead with the demand for removing Power Minister James Sangma.

Speaking to the media on Thursday, PDF president and Cabinet minister Banteidor Lyngdoh said the party had a discussion with Chief Minister Conrad Sangma on the misappropriation of funds in MeECL.

“We are a coalition partner in the MDA and whenever there is anything… we directly discuss with the CM and he always listens,” said Lyngdoh, who holds the agriculture and sports portfolios.

PDF has also welcomed the government’s decision to constitute an independent inquiry committee headed by a retired judge. “The inquiry will start now… so we will wait and see what the outcome is and based on that we will decide,” the minister said.

Lyngdoh observed that “the (removal of the power minister) is the prerogative of the chief minister”.

On the Congress’s demand for a CBI inquiry into the alleged scam in the implementation of the Saubhagya scheme, the PDF leader said the national party was “playing its role as an opposition” and “if we are in the opposition, definitely we will also do the same”.
