Prominent Khasi traditional healer passes away

Shillong, Aug 9: John F Kharshiing, Chairman, Society for Promotion of Indigenous Knowledge and Practice (SPIKAP, has condoled the death of herbal healer  Dr Plosimai Mawkhiew (90) from Laitdiengsai Village, East Khasi Hills.

“She has in a humble way rendered service to countless people of Khasi and Jaintia Hills who have benefited from her”, said Kharshiing.

She taught the skills of providing traditional herbal treatment with the use of traditional herbs.

“She has been a long time mentor and member of SPIKAP, the umbrella organisation of traditional healers of Meghalaya”, Kharshiing said.

Mawkhiew, was also part of a delegation of SPIKAP that visited Delhi on the invite from former President Dr Abdul Kalam on June 20, 2003 at Rashtrapati Bhavan, New Delhi.

“We still recall Kong (Dr) Plosimai Mawkhiew along with 18 of her colleagues from Meghalaya handing over her special medication and interacting and explaining to the former president about the use of the local medicine. We recall the late president stating during the interaction that “let it be known to all that you are all recognised by the office of the President of India”.
