Pulitzer award-winning photojournalist killed in Afghanistan

Kabul/Chennai, July 16 (UNI): Danish Siddiqui, an Indian photojournalist working for Reuters, was killed while covering clashes between Afghanistan security forces and Taliban militants in Spin Boldak district in Kandahar.

Afghan Ambassador to India Farid Mamundzay, tweeted on Friday, “Deeply disturbed by the sad news of the killing of a friend, Danish Siddiqui in Kandahar last night. The Indian Journalist & winner of Pulitzer Prize was embedded with Afghan security forces. I met him 2 weeks ago before his departure to Kabul. Condolences to his family & Reuters.”

Siddiqui had been covering the situation in Kandahar over the last few days and was embedded with Afghan security forces.

The 38-year-old Mumbai-based journalist had received the Pulitzer Prize as part of the Photography staff of Reuters.

Danish graduated with a degree in Economics from Jamia Millia Islamia, Delhi, and later got a degree in Mass Communication from the AJK Mass Communication Research Centre Jamia in 2007.

He started his career as a television news correspondent, later switching to photojournalism, and joined Reuters as an intern in 2010.

Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M K Stalin condoled the killing, saying, “I am deeply saddened by the untimely death of Danish Siddiqui, who, through his camera lens, had brought to us the devastation of pandemics, pogroms and humanitarian crises.”

“His death gives a message to the world once again to shun violence and terrorism in any form,” he added.
