Shillong, Feb 2: Residents of Veronica Lane, Laitumkhrah, have opposed the relocation of hawkers to the place.
Representing the residents, Monalisa Wankhar, Carmo Noronha and Bertha Dkhar have addressed the press in this regard, on Friday
Noronha, who is the director of Bethany Society, said that people will be affected by the use of footpaths by the hawkers and moreover, four institutions mostly of the differently abled, will also be affected by the move.
Bertha, who is the executive director of Bethany Society, said they are in the dark about the decision of the town vending committee.
According to Monalisa, there was no proper consultation with the residents of the area regarding the matter.
Ste said letters were submitted to the minister and others raising concerns about shifting the hawkers to Veronica Lane but in vain.
Noronha said they are not against the livelihood initiatives for hawkers but this should not curtail the free movement of the residents.
Local MLA and cabinet minister Ampareen Lyngdoh recently announced the decision to shift 89 hawkers of the area to Lady Veronica Lane.
