RS adjourned over Pegasus row

New Delhi, July 26 (UNI): Proceedings of the Rajya Sabha were adjourned for the day on Monday after witnessing multiple disruptions as the Opposition created a ruckus demanding discussion on the Pegasus snooping controversy.

Soon after the House resumed after the fifth adjournment, BJP leader Jugalsinh Mathurji Lokhandwala continued his speech in favour of The Marine Aids to Navigation Bill, 2021.

Raising a Point of Order, RJD member Manoj Jha blamed the government for reaching out to the Opposition that was refuted by the leader of the House, Piyush Goyal.

Responding to the allegation, he said that the Opposition lacked consensus. Goyal said he did invite the leaders of two main opposition parties but they refused.

“I am inviting again for a cup of tea at 1800 hrs today,” he said, adding, “It can’t be my way or highway.”

At this, Parliamentary Affairs Minister Pralhad Joshi said he had contacted Leader of Opposition Mallikarjun Kharge regarding it and will speak to other leaders as well. Amid the din, Tiruchi Siva of Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam said whenever a Prime Minister or LoP speaks, they are not disturbed. He accused the government of switching off Mr Kharge’s microphone while he was speaking.

With no immediate consensus in sight, the Chair adjourned the House for the day.

The Upper House had been adjourned for five times since morning before being adjourned for the day with the Opposition creating a ruckus over the snooping row.
