Star Cement mining clearance: JSU reveals state’s role

Shillong, June 16: The Jaintia Students’ Union (JSU) has questioned the state government’s ignorance in the environmental clearance to the expansion of limestone mining by Star Cement.

The union said on Wednesday why would Chief Minister Conrad Sangma not be honest about the state government’s knowledge about the mining recommendation through the Meghalaya State Pollution Control Board (MSPCB).

JSU said after serving a 24-hour deadline to the East Jaintia Hills deputy commissioner, it has received information that it was the MSPCB member secretary who gave the recommendation to the Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change to issue the environmental clearance to Star Cement Meghalaya Limited for its expansion project at Brishyrnot under Narpuh Elaka in East Jaintia Hills.

“(We) express our extreme resentment against the use of power by the government to suppress people’s voices who are directly affected by this mining,” the union said.

Further, JSU also questioned the silent attitude of the Jaintia Hills Autonomous District Council toward the NOC that was allegedly granted by the Brishyrnot dorbar shnong to the cement company without the consent of the district council.
