Shillong, Mar 23: The state BJP president, Rikman Momin will send an appeal to the national party president to reconsider the decision to extend support to the two NPP candidates-Ampareen Lyngdoh (Shillong) and Agatha Sangma(Tura) in the state for the April 19 Lok Sabha polls.
This was informed by BJP Vice President Bernard Marak on Saturday.
Sources said that in the meeting held in Shillong on Saturday chaired by party president Rikman Momin, many party members expressed unhappiness over the decision as the state leadership has been preparing for the polls.
A separate meeting is expected to be held in Tura to discuss the matter by the district leaders and members.
“If at all the NPP wanted our support, they should have consulted with us as the NPP considers BJP as opposition in Garo Hills and Jaintia Hills and the understanding is only at the state and national levels”, Marak said.
Marak had unsuccessfully contested against NPP National President and Chief Minister Conrad Sangma from Tura seat in the 2023 Assembly polls.
Conrad welcomed the support extended by the BJP.
Speaking to reporters, he said the decision of the alliance partner will have a positive impact on the NPP in the polls both in Shillong and Tura .
He added that the NDA partners are coming together in Arunachal Pradesh, Nagaland and Manipur for the Lok Sabha polls.
Nongthymmai TMC supports NPP
The.chief minister said the party is also getting the support of the TMC from Nongthymmai and also from other constituencies.
“We are very thankful to all political parties that are extending their support to us, we are now getting the support from the BJP, support from the TMC in Nongthymmai constituency and outside Nongthymmai constituency also, there would be TMC leaders who would be supporting the NPP. Like that, we are getting support from everybody and we are thankful for that but still there is a lot of work to be done. We have to reach out and we have to connect with the people and campaign for our candidates so that work is going on and we hope for the best,” he added.
