State hikes ex-gratia from Rs 5 lakh to Rs 10 lakh in man-animal conflict cases

Shillong, Feb 21: The government has increased the ex-gratia from Rs 5 lakh to Rs 10 lakh for people affected by man-animal conflict in the state.

In reply to a call attention motion moved by Pius Marwein (UDP) from Ranikor on the damage caused by wild elephants, the chief minister said that the increase in ex-gratia will be of some help to the people affected.

He wanted the members to remember that  agression and use of force against elephants is not the right way to deal with the situation. but information should be provided to the forest officials when violent incidents happen.

The chief minister informed the House that the government is conducting a survey of all animals and birds in the state.

Currently, the state has1800 elephants which move to Bangladesh and Assam and there is a need to have coordination of three administrations, he added.
