Trapped miner’s neighbour petitions human rights panel
Shillong, June 29: A neighbour of one of the trapped miners, has petitioned the chairperson of Meghalaya Human Rights Commission for speedy rescue operations.
Mujamel Hoque from Boko, Kamrup district, wrote to the commission stating though the miners are trapped for almost one month, the rescue/recovery options are slow.
While three bodies were handed over to the relatives, Hoque said two miners are still trapped inside the rat-hole mine.
He said one of the trapped miners, Abdul Karim (29), is from Boko.
He also narrated the plight of the families due to the delay.
The neighbour apprised the commission that the relatives are unable to visit the site as the authorities had not granted permission.
According to Hoque, the administration took some steps but these are not sufficient to recover the remaining bodies.
He said the rescue team is operating slowly and they have not shown any seriousness and if it continues this way, the operations will end and the bodies will not be recovered.
The petitioner apprised the chairperson of the commission that families of the miners are very poor without any political or financial support.
Hoque said on humanitarian ground, there is a need to speed up the operations so that the poor families will get justice.
