Shillong , April 28: Meghalaya Commercial Truck Owners and Drivers Association has asked the KHADC and the traditional institutions to dismantle illegal check gates on the highways.
Addressing a press conference on Thursday, the advisor of the association, JTS Lamare cited the recent assault of a driver identified as John Syiemlieh on April 6 at Lad Meri, Mairang, Eastern West Khasi Hills by the toll collectors.
According to Lamare, the toll gate was set up by KHADC and the Hima.
After a clarification was sought from the union ministry of road transport and highways, the reply was that the check gates are illegal.
Earlier, after the truckers’ body had alleged harassment at the check gates, the KHADC had sought proof from them.
The matter was also raised in Assembly by AITC legislator Charles Pyngrope and in Parliament by Shillong MP Vincent Pala.
