Shillong, Nov 21: Tura BJP MDC Bernard Marak has urged Education Minister Rakkam Sangma to address the scholarship issue that has gravely affected thousands of students in the state.

In a letter addressed to the minister, Marak said many students, due to the delay of availing the scholarship in time, were unable to clear their tuition fees and could not fill up the forms for their exams.

“This is a serious issue to the poor students of the state who were expecting to clear their dues through the scholarship and on being deprived, they were compelled to inform me to take up the matter with you for which, I am writing this letter to inform you of the grievances of the students. Your immediate intervention is sought so that the matter can be taken up and sorted out at the earliest. Umbrella Scholarship, as you may be aware, is a scholarship provided as a financial assistance to the students to cover up the cost of tuition fees, books and other educational expenses through the National Scholarship Portal (NSP). The students
are presently left in dilemma and helpless at this time of the year, when they are in immense pressure to clear their tuition fees and other college expenses without which the institutions do not provide them their admit cards for the exams. This is a serious issue and I request you to take up this matter sincerely and release the scholarships to the students so that the dues of the students can be cleared”,  he said.

Marak also requested  the minister to inform NEHU to consider some more
time for the students to fill up their exam forms. Overlooking such sensitive issue would
deprive the students of their rights and leave them at a loss.
