UT Khader elected first Muslim Speaker of Karnataka

Bengaluru, May 24 (UNI): Congress MLA UT Khader on Wednesday was unanimously elected as the new Speaker of the Karnataka Assembly.

Khader, a five-time Congress MLA, became the first Muslim Speaker of the state after a proposal was presented by Protem Speaker RV Deshpande which was unanimously adopted by the House.


Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah proposed Khader’s name for the post of Speaker and was seconded by Deputy Chief Minister DK Shivakumar.

In the previous assembly, Khader held the post of Deputy Leader of the Opposition. He was also a minister in the past.
