Want to ensure safety of new Assembly building: Speaker
Shillong, Feb 6: Assembly Speaker Thomas Sangma said he did not want to rush to complete the new Assembly building in Mawdiangdiang as he is concerned about the safety of the building.
Speaking to reporters on Thursday after the Business Advisory Committee (BAC) meeting, the speaker said, “My primary responsibility is to ensure that the safety of the building is not compromised”.
According to him, the 2025 autumn session will definitely be held in the new building.
The speaker said over 90 percent of the physical work has been completed.
Regarding the safety of the new building, the Speaker said, “I am not a technically sound person but as a layman, I can tell you that when we talk about safety ..earlier it was a 3000 ton load of the actual dome and now it has come down to 300 ton. We are trying to make it as light as possible”.
To a question on action to be taken against the construction company for time and cost overrun after the collapse of the dome , the speaker said the High Powered Committee will decide on the matter.
