Shillong, July 8: Two persons were arrested in West Garo Hills for ATM fraud, on Saturday.
West Garo Hills SP said on Saturday afternoon credible information was received from the people that one person is using ATM machine again and again with different ATM cards. Accordingly, a team from Phulbari PS responded and apprehended the person named Lotiful Islam, S/o Sahadat Hosen R/o Tumni, South Salmara, Assam and recovered 44 HDFC bank ATM cards,, 1 IPPB ATM card 1 SBI ATM card, 44 open HDFC ATM envelopes, 1 SBI pass book,1 IPPB pass book, one scooty B/R No. AS-18H-7723, two mobile phones and cash of Rs 10290.
On enquiry, it was learnt that the apprehended person works for the Assistant Branch Post Master of Tumni Post Office, South Salamara, Assam named Ashraful Islam, S/o Abdur Rashid Talukdar, R/o Baro Ravatary, South Salmara, Assam.
Later, Ashraful Islam appeared at Phulbari PS and stated that the work of Post Master is being done by him and he further deputed Lotiful islam illegally.to carry out his work.
Police suspect that they open the ATM card envelopes of the customers illegally without any authorisation and withdrew money using the PIN.
