Shillong, June 10: Congress leader Saleng Sangma on Monday resigned as MLA of Gambegre after winning four terms to the Assembly and securing the Tura Lok Sabha seat.
He submitted his resignation letter to Assembly Commissioner and Secretary Andrew Simons.
46-year-old Saleng had first contested and won on a Congress ticket from Dalamgiri in 2008.
After he was denied ticket by the Congress when Mukul Sangma was the Chief Minister, Saleng contested and won as Independent from the new delimited Gambegre constituency in 2013. In 2018, he won from NCP and again in 2023, he retained the seat after returning to Congress.
The party leaders will discuss as to who should be fielded as the Congress candidate for Gambegre, Saleng said.
“I would discuss with my people and party leaders regarding the setting up of a candidate for the upcoming bye-election for Gambegre seat”, he added.
The resignation letter of Saleng was accepted by the Assembly.
He was accompanied by the working president of the Meghalaya Pradesh Congress Committee (MPCC) and former minister Deborah Marak and Congress Mahila leaders.
Saleng defeated Agatha Sangma by a margin of over 1.55 lakh votes.
Saleng said, “I got elected for the Lok Sabha so before swearing in I think it is better to resign as MLA”, he said.
