Kolkata rape & murder: Accused sent to 14-day judicial custody
HC asks CBI to investigate financial irregularities at RG Kar Hospital
Kolkata, Aug 23 (UNI): A Kolkata court on Friday extended by 14 days the judicial custody of Sanjay Roy, the prime accused in the doctor murder and rape case, even as protesting doctors at RG Kar Hospital refused to return to OPDs and reiterated their demands for justice for their slain colleague and security at the workplace.
Roy, who was arrested on August 9 evening by the Kolkata Police on charges of rape and murder of the 31-year-old post-graduate woman medic at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital, was presented in the Sealdah court in central Kolkata which extended his judicial remand.
The development came on a day when the Calcutta High Court handed over the case of alleged financial irregularities in RG Kar Hospital to the Central Bureau of Investigation, along with taking over the files from Kolkata Police. The federal agency is already investigating the murder and rape of the doctor in the institution on August 9.

Meanwhile, the CBI has started preparing to conduct a polygraph test on Roy, ousted principal of RG Kar Hospital principal Sandip Ghosh and five other medics of the hospital.
‘Probe financial lapses’
The Calcutta High Court on Friday directed the CBI to probe the alleged financial irregularities committed by Sandip Ghosh, ex-principal of RG Kar Medical College and Hospital, since 2021, sources said.
The court also ordered Kolkata Police to hand over the case diary and all documents related to the alleged financial lapses to the federal agency by Saturday.
Justice Rajarshi Bharadwaj, while hearing a public interest litigation by former deputy superintendent at RG Kar Hospital, Akhtar Ali, ordered the CBI to probe the alleged financial irregularities
The court noted that multiple agencies probing similar facts would lead to delay and inefficiencies.
“This court directs the investigation be transferred to CBI as multiple investigations will lead to injustice… investigation should not be fragmented to different agencies… The SIT directed the case diary and CCTV footage to CBI by 10 am tomorrow,” the court said.
