Nepal protest: Army takes control; Modi holds security meet

MEA advises Indians to defer travel plans, asks Indians in Nepal to follow authorities' guidelines

Shillong, Sept 10 (Agencies): The Nepal Army has taken control of the situation after Prime Minister KP OIi resigned on Tuesday.

The Army has urged protesters to maintain peace. Some media reports said the army started arresting rioters. It has also started strict checkings in sensitive areas to maintain peace.

In a video shared on social media, Chief of Army Staff of the Nepal Army, Ashok Raj Sigdel, was heard saying, “…Since the beginning of Nepal’s history, the Nepal Army has always remained committed—even in difficult circumstances—to safeguarding Nepal’s independence, sovereignty, territorial integrity, freedom, national unity, and the security of the Nepali people. We express deep sorrow over the irreparable loss of lives and property during the ongoing movement in Nepal.”
In another media report, the Ministry of External Affairs advised Indian citizens to put on hold travel plans in the wake of the Nepal protest and wait till the dust settles.

“In view of the developing situation in Nepal, Indian citizens are advised to defer travel there until the situation has stabilised. Indian citizens presently in Nepal are advised to shelter in their current places of residence, avoid going out onto the streets, and exercise all due caution,” the MEA said.

“Indian nationals in Nepal are advised to exercise caution and adhere to the steps and guidelines issued by the Nepali authorities,” the MEA added.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi chaired a meeting of the Cabinet Committee on Security to monitor the situation in the neighbouring country.
