Shillong, Feb 23: Veteran Trinamool Congress leader and former Railway Minister Mukul Roy passed away in the early hours of Monday after a prolonged illness. He was 71.
According to media reports, Roy, who was reportedly suffering from dementia and Parkinson’s disease and was admitted in a hospital in Kolkata, suffered a massive cardiac around 1.30 am.
Condoling his death, Prime Minister Narendra Modi wrote on social media, “Pained by the passing of former Union Minister Shri Mukul Roy Ji. He will be remembered for his political experience and efforts to serve society. Condolences to his family and supporters. Om Shanti.”
West Bengal Chief Minister said she had a long political acquaintance with Roy, and the news has deeply saddened her.
Roy was one of the crucial leaders in the formation of the TMC and had always been a dedicated party worker. However, in 2017, he quit the party and from the Rajya Sabha MP post. He also resigned from the party’s primary membership after a fallout with the party chief.
