Mass poisoning near Laban Circuit House shocks Shillong

A mysterious incident involving the deaths of several dogs, cats and birds near Laban Circuit House has triggered concern across Shillong, with residents, animal welfare activists and officials demanding answers. The circumstances surrounding the deaths have raised suspicions of deliberate poisoning, but days after the incident, the mystery remains unsolved.

The incident reportedly took place on the night of June 21 and came to light the following morning when staff members at Laban Circuit House discovered several dead animals within and around the premises. According to reports, a light blue-coloured substance mixed with rice and meat was found at the site, leading authorities to suspect that poisoned food may have been intentionally placed in the area.

The deaths have shocked many, particularly because the incident occurred in a prominent government residential compound. While the exact cause of death has not yet been officially confirmed, samples of the suspected food and animal carcasses have been collected and sent for laboratory examination. Officials are now awaiting the results, which are expected to determine whether poisoning was indeed the cause.

Among the animals that died were two pet dogs belonging to Health Commissioner and Secretary Joram Beda, who is currently residing at the Circuit House. Another dog is reportedly missing. Several stray dogs and cats are also believed to have died, though the exact number remains unclear.

Adding another dimension to the case is the survival of one dog that allegedly consumed the same food. The animal is currently under observation and treatment by the Animal Husbandry and Veterinary Department at Garikhana. Veterinary findings from the surviving dog could provide investigators with crucial clues regarding the substance involved and the sequence of events that led to the deaths.

However, the investigation has already encountered significant obstacles. One of the biggest challenges is the lack of surveillance footage. The CCTV camera installed at the entrance of Laban Circuit House was reportedly not functioning at the time of the incident. Meanwhile, cameras from nearby establishments, including a neighbouring government facility, are said to provide only limited coverage of the area.

The absence of clear footage has sparked concerns over security and accountability. Investigators currently have no visual evidence showing who may have entered the area or placed the suspected poisoned food. This has left authorities dependent on forensic analysis, witness accounts and local intelligence to piece together the events of that night.

Residents and animal lovers have expressed outrage over the deaths, describing the incident as both cruel and alarming. Many have urged authorities not to treat the case as a routine matter but as a serious act that warrants a comprehensive investigation.

The incident has also reignited broader discussions about public safety, law enforcement and unresolved investigations in the city. While the victims in this case are animals, many residents see the issue as one that reflects larger concerns about crime and accountability.

That apart, another important issue is of animal rights. How much are citizens aware of animal rights? Why are strays been treated inhumanly? Some recent court orders had fuelled hostility of a section of citizens towards strays and local animal lovers. Is it this hostility that led to such alleged mass poisoning of the animals and birds? Or, was it just a manifestation of a sick mind? Either way, the incident not something that the authorities could put under the wraps.

Questions are now being raised about whether this case will receive the attention and urgency it deserves or whether it will eventually fade from public memory. Shillong has witnessed several investigations over the years that have remained unresolved for extended periods, leaving victims’ families and the public waiting for answers. some residents fear that the deaths near Laban Circuit House could become another case that lingers in official records without a definitive conclusion.

The fact that the incident occurred in a high-profile government area has only intensified public interest. If a deliberate act of poisoning could take place in such a location without being captured on surveillance cameras, many are asking what that says about security arrangements and monitoring systems elsewhere in the city.

The mystery remains unsolved. The results of forensic examinations, veterinary reports and any subsequent police findings will be crucial in determining what happened and who may be responsible. Until those answers emerge, the deaths of the animals near Laban Circuit House continue to raise troubling questions.

Will investigators uncover the truth behind the suspected poisoning and bring those responsible to justice? Or will this mystery join the growing list of pending cases and inquiries that remain unresolved? For many residents, the answer will serve as a test of the authorities’ commitment to accountability and justice—regardless of whether the victims have a voice to speak for themselves.
