AITC state president against party MP’s view on minority status to Hindus in Meghalaya

Shillong, April 1: AITC state president Charles Pyngrope said on Friday that the party in Meghalaya does not endorse the stand of its MP from West Bengal, who demanded minority status to Hindus in Meghalaya.

Referring to Centre’s stand through an affidavit in Supreme Court that the states can decide on minority status to Hindus, Trinamool Congress MP Shanta Chhetriย  raised the matter in Rajya Sabha on Friday and wanted the Meghalaya government to grant minority status to Hindus.

When contacted, Charles said it would be ideal for the MP to keep the comments restricted to her own state.

“We are a secular state, we cannot endorse her views in Meghalaya”, Charles said.

Earlier on Thursday, Chief Minister Conrad Sangma said he is yet to get details regarding the matter.
