BJP spokesman in favour of Hek contesting Shillong LS seat

Shillong,, Dec 1:  BJP leader M Kharkrang favoured cabinet minister AL Hek to contest the Shillong seat from the BJP.

Speaking to reporters on Friday, chief spokesperson M Kharkrang said it would be wonderful if six-time legislator of Pynthorumkhrah and cabinet minister AL Hek  is made the official candidate from Shillong parliamentary constituency iin 2024 Lok Sabha elections.

Kharkrang said, “If we can have AL Hek, who is a six-time MLA as a candidate also, that will be wonderful.”

He said the central leadership of the party has not asked for any proposals in this regard.  “Therefore, no official names have gone to Delhi till now,” he said.

Hek recently told media persons that the central leadership of the party will make a decision and added there are three candidates vying for the ticket from Shillong.

To a question, he said, “It is not about the euphoria of putting up candidates; basically we have to see whether we have any eligible candidate.”

“Everything is open for everything and we would love to if we have a good women candidate. We are not closing our doors, we open it to all,” he said.

No pre-poll alliance 

The spokesperson said the party is not keen to have any pre-poll alliance ahead of the LS polls.

“There is no indication as such. In the previous election, the BJP has always contested on its  own,” he said.

HNLC talks 

The former IPS officer said the party leaves it to the government as far as the ongoing peace talks with the proscribed Hynniewtrep National Liberation Council (HNLC) is concerned.

“If it can bring peace to the state, then why not,” Kharkrang said.

The HNLC chairman cum Commander-in-chief Bobby Marwein and general secretary-cum-publicity secretary Sainkupar Nongtraw had recently expressed their inability to participate in the peace talks till the government drops all pending cases against them.
