Shillong, July 23: Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said on Friday that at some point of time, the presence of the Centre will be necessary to resolve the border dispute.
Speaking to reporters after the first round of border talks, Himanta said that both the states are eager to resolve the issue as soon as possible but at some point of time even the presence of the Government of India will be required.
He said all 12 disputed areas cannot be resolved within a timeframe as the states will take up the areas one by one and wherever some solution and agreements are possible, the states will keep on making efforts while at the same time going on discussing the complex boundaries.
“But out of 12 places, some places are not that complex. So, we will address those places first and then will come to complex areas and then will go to the very complex issue and at some point of time even the presence of government of India will be necessary because under our constitution, the state boundary can be changed only by the Parliament of India,” he said.
He added that while the states will be discussing bilaterally, at some point of time, the Centre has to come in as there must be some kind of a guiding force in the discussion and basically, the union home minister is encouraging both the chief ministers to discuss this issue and resolve it but at an appropriate time, the states will go back to the Centre for guidance.
