College of Agriculture celebrates foundation day

Shillong, Feb 28: The College of Agriculture, Kyrdemkulai, celebrated it’s 7th Foundation Day on February 24, participated by students, faculties, scientists, senior state government officials and farmers in a hybrid mode.

Chief Secretary Rebecca V Suchiang  was the  chief guest and Dr. Arun Kumar Sarma, Director General, NECTAR, New Delhi was the guest of honour. Dr. Anupam Mishra, Vice Chancellor, Central Agricultural University, Imphal was the chairman of the programme.

Suchiang and others witnessed  demonstration on “Integrated Farming System model, Natural Farming model and waste to wealth programme’

Dr U K Behera, Dean, College of Agriculture, Kyrdemkulai, (Central Agricultural University, Imphal) presented an overview of the college’s timeline of development during the past years.

Prof. Arun Kumar Sarma highlighted the important activities and future prospects which can be carried out using advanced technology. He said various advanced tectonologies can be applied in agriculture for overall development of the state and the Northeastern region as a whole.

Suchiang appreciated the efforts and activities made by the college of agriculture in a remote area. She discussed about the importance of proper infrastructure development in the periphery of the college area like the road, transport and others.

She said the IFS model developed by the college should be replicated in other locations of the state for betterment of the local farmers for their sustainable development. She extended support for various activities by the college.

The chief secretary released the college  news bulletin and distributed piglets and pig feed to the farmers of the area.

In the afternoon, a webinar on “Vibrant North Eastern Hill Region with Special Emphasis on Integrated Natural Resource Management” was organised, which was chaired by Dr AR Sharma, Director of Research, CAU, Jhansi and co-chaired by Behera.

The first lecture on ‘Changing Principles of Crop Production- Past Vs. Present’, was delivered by Behera. This was followed by a lecture on ‘Conservation Agriculture for Enhancing Resource Use Efficiency and Adaptation and Mitigation of Climate Change’ by Sharma. The third presentation was  by Dr. Ramesh Sharma, Principle Scientist, ICAR-Indian Institute of Maize Research, Ludhiana, Punjab, and he spoke on the topic ‘Maize Production Strategy for NEH Region’.

Around 200 participants from different parts of the country participated in the programme.
