Demand to shift CRPF camp from Mawlai

MLA visits violence affected areas, MDC-led delegation meets CM

Shillong, Aug 16: Congress MLA PT Sawkmie on Monday visited the violence affected areas in Mawlai-Nongkwar where clashes erupted on Sunday night.

The clashes were between the CRPF and the residents after the former raided the area.

According to Sawkmie, three people were injured and houses, shops and vehicles were vandalised by the CRPF men.

Following the incident, the residents and the local MLA asked the government to shift the CRPF camp to any other place.

Sawkmie said that that the CRPF camp should be shifted from the area as people know who is breaking the law.

“This compels me to condemn the behaviour of the CRPF and the camp should be shifted at the earliest,” he said.

Later, MDC of Mawlai constituency, Teiborlang Pathaw and nine headmen from Mawlai called on Chief Minister and  Deputy Chief Minister to discuss the situation in Mawlai.

Besides the demand for a judicial inquiry, the delegation submitted a memorandum requesting the shifting of the temporary CRPF camp in Mawlai which is situated on the land belonging to the Arts & Culture Department.

The chief minister discussed the matter with the IG of CRPF who wanted an alternative location and subsequently a permanent site where the CRPF can set up its camp.

The chief minister and the deputy chief minister have assured the delegation that immediate steps will be taken to shift the CRPF camp from Mawlai.

They also wanted the delegation to play an active role in order to ensure peace in Mawlai area and Shillong city.
