Environmentalist Sunderlal Bahuguna passes away at 94

Aurangabad/Mumbai, May 21 (UNI): With the demise of Padma Vibhushan Sunderlal Bahuguna, the country has lost a nature sage on Friday, said Maharashtra Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray.

The noted environmentalist died at AIIMS in Rishikesh. He was 94. Bahuguna suffered from Covid-19 infection for several days prior to his death. The Chipko movement of the seventies gained momentum under him.

In his condolence message, Thackeray said, “From the Chipko movement, Bahuguna not only saved the trees but also took the environmental protection movement from house to house.”

“He raised his voice for the rights of the common man. Bahuguna, who sacrificed his life for the protection of the environment, was an inspiration to environmentalists around the world. We have lost the nature sage who had the utmost respect for nature. A heartfelt tribute to Bahuguna,” he added.
