New Delhi, Jan 1 (UNI): India on Saturday supplied 500,000 doses of Covid-19 vaccine Covaxin to Afghanistan, and will be supplying an additional batch of 500,000 doses in the coming weeks.
The Ministry of External Affairs, in a statement, said the vaccine doses were handed over to the Indira Gandhi Hospital in Kabul.
Earlier, on December 11, India had sent the first batch of humanitarian assistance to Afghanistan, comprising 1.6 metric tonnes of life-saving medicines, through the World Health Organization (WHO).
The medicines were sent via a return Kam Air flight from Delhi, and were handed over to the Indira Gandhi Children Hospital in Kabul.
“In the coming weeks, we would be undertaking the supply of wheat and the remaining medical assistance. In this regard, we are in touch with UN agencies and others for finalising the modalities for transportation,” the Ministry of External Affairs said in a statement.
“The Government of India has committed to providing humanitarian assistance to Afghan people consisting of food grains, one million doses of COVID Vaccine and essential life-saving drugs,” it said.
India is supplying 50,000 MT of wheat as humanitarian assistance to Afghanistan by road via Pakistan. However, the wheat consignment remains stuck at Wagah with New Delhi and Islamabad still to come to an agreement on the modalities of transportation.
