Jorhat student leader upset over FB post on city woman

Shillong, May 16: Abinash Phukan, a resident of Jorhat, was shocked when he first heard about the social media post on Saturday that has tarnished his name.
A Facebook post that has gone viral in the city shows the photograph of Phukan that is on his page. “I came to know about it today (on Saturday) and I have been getting calls since morning. I am not the only Abinash Phukan on Facebook. It is distressful and I have to report it to the cyber crime branch. The experts can find out how the post came up on social media,” said the 21-year-old member of All Jorhat District Students’ Union on phone.
The post says, “I’m a Covid-19 and HIV positive patient from Assam… I spent time with this prostitute from Shillong and she said her name is Khamti… Please help me find her and prevent the spread of the virus. I’m sorry for spreading corona to your city. I’m sorry.”
The post also had the photograph of a woman, who had earlier told Meghalaya Monitor that her name was maligned in the post. She has lodged a complaint at Rynjah police station.
However, Phukan’s Facebook page does not show the post when checked on Saturday.
Phukan told Meghalaya Monitor that he had never visited Shillong before. “In fact, I was planning to and the pandemic started. Now, after this incident, I will never visit Shillong,” said a distressed Phukan.
“Even if the post was deleted, the cyber crime branch can find out,” the student leader added.
