Bishnoi from the 1991 batch of Assam-Meghalaya cadre was in the list of three empanelled officers approved by the UPSC in its meeting held on February 9 this year.

The state government had sent five names.

Besides Bishnoi, Mukesh Agrawal and KV Singh Deo, both belonging to the 1989 batch, were also shortlisted by the UPSC out of the five names sent by the state government after the retirement of R Chandranathan on December 21, 2021.

The other two officers are S. Narayan Singh (1991 batch) and Idashisha Nongrang (1992 batch). Nongrang is the current special DGP.

Tenure less than a year

The new Meghalaya DGP will get less than a year in the state as he will be retiring in March.

When contacted, Bishnoi said he will take charge when he is relieved of the current post in Assam.

To a question on whether the Meghalaya government made the appointment late as the UPSC had shortlisted the names on February 9 this year, Bishnoi said,” I don’t think so”.
