Pollution control board to audit Byrnihat industries

Assam issues similar order to assess pollution level

Shillong, March 18: The state government has directed the Meghalaya State Pollution Control Board, to carry out a comprehensive audit and inspection of all the industrial units located in Byrnihat town and to submit action taken report within seven days.

Commissioner & Secretary, Forest and Environment Pravin Bakshi said on Tuesday that as per directions issued by Chief Minister in a recent stock taking with officials of Forest and Environment Department, the Meghalaya State Pollution Control Board has been directed to perform a comprehensive audit and inspection of all industrial units in Byrnihat on Meghalaya side .

The chief minister had already made a comprehensive statement in the Budget Session of the Assembly regarding negative global and national reports and urged coordinated action between Assam and Meghalaya. He had also sent a letter to  Assam Chief Minister for collaborative action as most of the polluting industries of red category are on the Assam side of ‘Burnihat’

Assam Pollution Control Board has already initiated action and steps for audit & inspection of their industrial units . At the same time Meghalaya government is also initiating stringent measures to monitor and review pollution on Meghalaya side, Bakshi said.

There were several media reports relating to ‘very poor’ status of pollution level of PM 2.5, PM 10, SO2 and NO2 beyond the permissible limits prescribed by the Central Pollution Control Board in Byrnihat town.
