Pressure groups question govt apathy to remove top cops

Shillong, Sept 12: Four NGOs on Sunday threatened to take a stern decision against the state government for its indifference to the demand for suspending top police officers to ensure fair investigation into the killing of former HNLC leader Cherishstarfield Thangkhiew on August 13.

In a statement issued here, the four pressure groups — Khasi Students’ Union, Federation of Khasi Jaintia and Garo People, Hynniewtrep National Youth Front and Ri Bhoi Youth Front — questioned the reason for Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma and his Cabinet’s dithering on taking action against the police personnel involved in the Thangkhiew’s killing.

“Home Minister Lahkmen Rymbui had claimed that he was not aware of the operation which led to the death of Thangkhiew, so who had given the order? Who is above the home minister in the Home Department? Whether he has resigned as home minister or just pretending to wash his hands of the incident,” they asked.

“We warned the state government that it should take the matter seriously before it’s too late and before we take stern decision,” the NGOs said.
