TUR demands food security for the poor after central directive

Shillong, June 4: The Thma U Jangli Juki (TUR) has asked the state government to immediately implement the Centre’s advisory to ensure food security in the lower stratum of the society.

In a statement issued on Friday, TUR said the Ministry of Consumer Affairs, Food and Public Distribution on June 3 said it was important to ensure coverage of all eligible identified persons from the most economically weakest section under the National Food Security Act.

“The central government has asked all the states and UTs to launch a special drive to reach out, identify and issue NFSA ration cards to the most vulnerable and economically weakest sections of the population in urban and rural areas and directed that vulnerable sections such as hawkers, marginal farmers, homeless etc need to be reached immediately. TUR urges that this should be done on an emergency footing given the precarious food security and impending hunger situation among the working classes,” the organisation said.

TUR also reiterated its demand for income support to daily wagers and those for whom the extended lockdown has been devastating.

“TUR will be submitting additional lists of complaints of those who did not get or got only half of the promised income support in 2020 and reiterates that this time the income support given should be more transparent and accountable with names and status of applications being made public from the beginning so that applicants can follow up on the process,” it added.
