Shillong, Nov 26: The two-member committee appointed by the Centre on NEHU issue completed its probe and returned to New Delhi on Tuesday.
An official source said the members returned to Delhi on Tuesday and they will submit the report to the union ministry of education.
They had a meeting with NEHU students and teachers on Monday after their arrival on Sunday. The agitating teachers and students opposed the return of NEHU VC PS Shukla to the University during their meeting with the committee.
The committee was constituted by the higher education department of the ministry of education on November 14 and the direction was to complete the report within 15 days along with recommendations and corrective actions.
Professors DP Singh, former Chairman of UGC and Dilip Chandra Nath, former Vice-Chancellor of Assam University were the members of the committee and they were assisted by DK Himanshu, Under Secretary, Department of Education, Union Ministry of Education and B Ravi Narayanan, Under Secretary, UGC, New Delhi.
The Centre wanted the committee to examine the following issues.
Declining university rankings: A significant drop in the university’s ranking in the National Institutional Ranking Framework (NIRF), which is attributed to alleged administrative negligence.
Controversial appointments: Allegations of irregular appointments including the appointments of the Registrar and the Deputy Registrar, which are claimed to have contributed to the university’s inefficiency.
Infrastructural neglect: Reports of poor maintenance and neglect of basic amenities and infrastructure, adversely affecting the academic environment and student welfare.
Non-responsiveness of the Vice-Chancellor: Multiple complaints and memoranda from student bodies, including demands for essential reforms, have reportedly been ignored by the Vice-Chancellor.
