Woman writes to NHRC after khap threat in Arunachal village

Shillong, April 28: A woman in Arunachal Pradesh’s Papum Pare district has lodged a complaint with the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) against the headman of her village alleging khap panchayat trial.

Padma Sabha Chakma said in her complaint that the gaonbura of Chengmara Chakma Basti in the district, Nilo Kanta Chakma, summoned a khap panchayat trial against her after an inappropriate photograph of Padma went viral on social media and for harassing her.

“I am the victim because my inappropriate photo was uploaded on social media, summoning me for the trial is nothing but victimising the victim and victim-shaming. The offences are being committed because I am a local woman leader and general secretary of the Mandir Management Committee,” said Padma in the letter to NHRC.

The victim requested NHRC to stop the trial by Nilo Kanta or any other gaonbura.
