Shillong, Feb 24: Meghalaya State Commission for Women has written to Assam Women’s Commission to take action against harassment of Sr. Rosemary in the neighbouring state.
An official said on Saturday that the Vice Chairperson has written to Assam Women’s panel on Friday apprising about the incident and the need to take appropriate action.
The nun had faced harassment over her religious dress while she was about to board a bus from Dudhnoi to Goalpara on February 17.
Earlier, the state women’s commission said such incidents can cause serious implication to the victim both as a woman and as a religious person. Hence the commission urged the governments of Meghalaya and Assam to coordinate with each other and ensure that the perpetrators are found and brought to justice.
“Meghalaya is a state that is inclusive of people belonging to all religious beliefs and we uphold the democratic tenets of our Constitution. We must ensure that religious tolerance and respect is maintained between the peoples of both states and that we continue to live among each other in true harmony. Both the governments must strive to ensure that peace is maintained and such culprits are held accountable for their actions that is dehumanising towards any religious person”, the women’s panel said.
