Japan gets first woman PM, finance minister
Tokyo, Oct 21 (Agencies): Sanae Takaichi, a conservative, became the first woman to hold the Prime Minister’s office in Japan.
Takaichi (64), the leader of the Liberal Democratic Party, won a strong majority in both Upper and Lower Houses. After her election on Tuesday as Prime Minister, the hardliner went ahead to form her Cabinet.
Another first in Takaichi’s Cabinet will be Satsuki Katayama, the first woman to become the country’s finance minister. Other women in power in the current government under Takaichi are Kimi Onoda, minister in charge of economic security and immigration policy, and Masanao Ozaki and Kei Sato as deputy chief cabinet secretaries.
Takaichi takes charge of the government at a critical time when the world’s fourth-largest economy is on a wobbly ground.
