15 districts in Bihar marooned; 5 die

Patna, August 14 (UNI): Bihar Deputy Chief Minister Renu Devi on Saturday said 82 blocks spread over 15 districts were affected by floods while five people lost their lives so far in the state.

Renu Devi, also the Disaster Management Minister, told mediapersons that relief and rescue operations were in full swing in flood-hit areas. A total of 178 community kitchens were operational where arrangements of meals for more than one lakh flood victims had been made, she added.

She said medical teams were camping near relief centres in the affected areas for treatment of the ailing. Stock of sufficient medicines had also been made for flood victims, she said, adding that arrangements for treatment of cattle had also been made.

The deputy chief minister said the government was sensitive to the problems. A total of 1,729 boats had been pressed into service for relief and rescue operation in flood-ravaged areas, she added.

Renu Devi said trained personnel of National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) and State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) had been deployed for relief and rescue operations. Several teams of engineers of Water Resources Department were keeping close watch on water levels of various rivers in the state, she added.
